Bonga: $21bn May Be Heading Offshore, But Who Gets Paid Onshore?
DA-X23 · Energy · By David Adeniji ·
The Bonga South-West/Aparo deepwater project could attract up to $21 billion in investment. The bigger opportunity question is how much of that spending Nigerian businesses, professionals and workers can capture.
Today's Signal
Agreements involving NNPC, SNEPCo, Esso and Agip have moved the Bonga South-West/Aparo deepwater project closer to final investment decision, with NNPC estimating potential investment of $15–$21 billion.
Money Direction
Deepwater investment → engineering and project development → fabrication and equipment → marine vessels and aviation → logistics and procurement → maintenance and technical services → insurance, security and professional services → workers and contractors → housing, food, transportation and other local spending.
Opportunity Areas
Engineering, fabrication, marine services, vessels, aviation, logistics, equipment supply, maintenance, procurement, insurance, catering, accommodation, security, professional services, transportation and local supply chains.
Skills Signal
Deepwater engineering, welding and fabrication, marine operations, procurement, project management, HSE and safety, equipment maintenance, logistics, quality assurance, technical inspection and offshore operations.
Who Should Pay Attention
Nigerian engineering and fabrication companies, marine operators, logistics businesses, equipment suppliers, oilfield service companies, insurers, professional-service firms, hospitality businesses, engineers, welders, procurement professionals, technicians, recruiters, job seekers and investors.

DA-X23: The numbers are huge, so is the economics. What happens when a potential $21 billion oil project starts buying?
NNPC, Shell’s SNEPCo, Esso and Agip have all signed agreements moving the Bonga South-West/Aparo deepwater project closer to final investment decision. NNPC estimates the development could attract $15–$21 billion.
The obvious story is oil. Right? But I'm watching the shopping list.
A deepwater project of this scale doesn't simply spend money beneath the ocean. It needs engineering, fabrication, vessels, logistics, aviation, equipment, maintenance, insurance, catering, accommodation, security, professional services and an army of technical capabilities. Now, read again? Which of these sectors do you play?
That is where billions begin breaking into contracts, salaries and everyday transactions.
A Nigerian fabrication company doesn't need to own an oilfield to benefit. Neither does the engineer, welder, marine specialist, procurement professional or logistics operator.
Even businesses several steps away should pay attention. More workers around project locations mean more demand for housing, food, transportation and services.
But there's another thing... PEOPLE! Yes, you and me, with all our impressive academic titles. 😊
Big projects don't automatically produce big local opportunities. Nigerian firms must meet procurement, safety, financing and technical standards; our people must possess the capabilities contractors actually need.
So perhaps the question isn't simply whether $21 billion is coming.
It is whether enough Nigerian businesses and professionals will be READY when the purchase orders start moving.
If Bonga reaches FID (Final Investment Decision), which Nigerian industry do you think stands to capture the biggest opportunity outside oil production itself—and are we prepared for it?
